Regulation of the Common

In short, the rules include the following provisions:

  • No fires
  • No vehicles or motor-bikes (except on roads)
  • No horse riding or cycling (except on roads or on the bridleway)
  • No dumping or litter
  • No grazing (except by commoners)
  • No camping
  • No shooting
  • No damage to or removal of trees, plants, turf, timber or wildlife
  • Dogs should be kept under effective control at all times

In more detail:

s.10 (1) of the Monken Hadley Common Act 2022 provides that:
On and after the appointed day [1st December 2022], the Trust may make regulations to secure the good management of the Common including for the following purposes

(a) the conservation of the natural state of the Common;

(b) the preservation of order and the prevention of nuisances on the Common;

(c) the exercise of rights of common; and

(d) to secure public safety

The Trust has drawn up these Regulations (which can be viewed here), and following public consultation these are awaiting final confirmation by the Secretary of State.  The Act also contains a transitional provision that in the interim before they are confirmed the Rules and Orders made by the Commoners of Monken Hadley Common on 8 April 1981 shall continue to have effect until revoked by the new Regulations.
