The Trustees

Andrew Walker Chair

Andrew retired from investment banking several years ago. He has been a long-time supporter of Monken Hadley Common since moving to the area in 1995; initially as a committee member, then as Chair of the Management Committee, and now as Chair of Monken Hadley Common Trust. He was part of the group of local people who created the Friends of Monken Hadley Common in 1997.

A mathematics graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Andrew is a qualified accountant (FCCA), holds an MBA in Finance, and maintains his interest in education as a teacher of mathematics, serving as Vice Chair of governors of a school in Potters Bar, and helping his old College. In his “spare” time Andrew has recently completed an MA in Education and is now reading for a master’s degree in mathematics.

Barbara Taylor

Barbara moved to Barnet in 1975 when she married. She worked with the Halifax Building Society in management.

Since 1978 she has been churchwarden of St Mary the Virgin, Monken Hadley on 5 occasions each time serving as a trustee of the Common. Barbara has been a trustee of the Monken Hadley Common Trust since its foundation in 2022.

She was involved in fundraising for both St Mary’s and Monken Hadley Primary School where she was Chair of Governors.

After retirement, Barbara joined Barnet Rotary Club, and became a trustee for Jesus Hospital Charity and the Hyde Foundation.

William Boyes

William (“Bill”) was born in Barnet in 1949 and has lived in the town for most of his life. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were solicitors who practised from 20 Wood St, which was also the family home until the 1950s.

Bill has had a very close connection with Hadley Common since he joined Monken Hadley Cricket Club in the mid-60s. After hanging up his pads, he has continued to assist with the maintenance and improvement of the ground at the west end of the Common.

He became the Clerk to the Churchwardens, the then owners of the Common, in October 2000 and remained in post until MHCT took ownership on 1st December 2022. Bill was responsible on behalf of the Churchwardens for the instruction of and liaison with the Parliamentary Agents who lodged the Monken Hadley Common Bill in November 2019 and took it through to Royal Assent on 28th April 2022.

For more than 7 years he has been a weekly member of the volunteers who look after the Common. On behalf of the Trust he is responsible for the application to DEFRA for the approval of regulations to govern use of the Common by the public.

Finally, Bill is a member of the local Ramblers Group and the Open Spaces Society.

Roger Headey

One of Roger’s main reasons for settling in the area between New Barnet and High Barnet was to be near the open spaces provided by the Common and Tudor Park. Following early retirement, Roger was asked to become a curator of the Common, which he did for 10 years. According to Roger, most of his work involved organising the fantastic team of volunteers who do so much to preserve the natural beauty of our common heritage.

John Hall

John is a retired partner of the law firm, Eversheds Sutherland. He has lived in Hadley Wood since 1984. During this period he and his family have enjoyed countless walks across the Common. Until its recent merger with MHCT, John was a member of the Friends of Hadley Common. He is currently Chair of Barnet Museum and Local History Society and of the trustees of St Paul’s Church, Hadley Wood.

He is a former governor of Barnet College and has served on the boards of other education charities, including the Royal College of Music, of which he is an honorary member, a local school in Potters Bar and two City Academy trusts.

Finally, John is a member of the Hadley Wood Association and is committed to conserving and protecting the Common for future generations to enjoy.

Leo (Leonora) Petrou

Leo moved to Chipping Barnet from Finchley Central two years ago on her retirement from the world of art and antiques, to be near to and able to walk in the open spaces offered by Hadley Wood, and joined the volunteers to help in their maintenance. She has always had an interest in the conservation of wild spaces and was a founder member of Finchley Friends of the Earth in 1990. She has had a number of volunteering roles: teaching pottery at St. Mary’s CE School in Finchley and one to one with a disabled person at Hendon College; serving on the Mayor of Barnet’s Charity 2000/2001 and more recently has been working at English Heritage as a volunteer explainer at Kenwood House.

Linden Reilly

Linden Reilly was born in High Barnet and grew up nearby. Her higher education was in art and design relating to both practice and theory. She was, until her retirement, senior lecturer and Course Leader of the MA by Project at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design.

Linden moved into a cottage with commoners rights on Monken Hadley Common. This led, together with other concerns, to her being a volunteer on the common, and Trustee of the Monken Hadley Common Trust. This links well with her interests in the conservation and restoration of the natural environment and of buildings. Linden is a member of Woodland Trust, Plantlife, and the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.
